The consumer behaviors have changed. At the recent Content360 conference in Hong Kong, Cindy Ho, Vice President of Business Development at AsiaPac Net Media, took the stage to discuss a massive shift in how people buy things online. The gist is that we’ve moved from an era of simply consuming media to an era of obsessively verifying it. She also shared how brands can navigate this evolution.
For years, brands thought getting ahead in the digital marketing race just meant getting noticed. But today, people are flooded with so much polished corporate messaging that catching their eyes isn’t the hard part anymore. The real challenge now is to get them to actually trust you.

Moving Past the One-Way Broadcast
“Brands no longer have an attention problem; they have a belief problem.”
This statement was emphasised during the talk to highlight how much consumer behaviour has changed. We’re moving from a Media Culture (where brands speak and audiences consume) to a Verification Culture (where brands speak and audiences audit). Today’s buyers don’t just take an ad’s word for it. They cross-check, vet, and investigate. In fact, an IAB study found that 89% of consumers actively double-check information in ads before making a purchase. When a brand makes a bold claim, the consumer's immediate reaction is to look for proof.
This is why brands sometimes fall into the “Thin Signal” trap.

What is a Thin Signal?
A Thin Signal doesn’t mean you have bad press or negative reviews. Instead, it is the total absence of credible, independent, and organic signals (like user-generated content) to back up a brand’s paid marketing campaigns. In other words, there is no trust.
If a consumer looks for your brand and finds no authentic unboxings, no real user reviews, and no independent validation, the signal weakens and the trust chain breaks. Ultimately, you're left with lots of attention, but zero conversions.

Overcoming the Trust Gap
To bridge this gap, the presentation highlighted a shift from generic influencer campaigns to a highly strategic approach. Rather than chasing massive follower counts for a quick burst of attention, it requires a mix of three core pillars:
- Diversifying tiers and platforms: Building real social proof means working across multiple platforms and blending creators of all sizes, from micro- to mega-influencers.
- Answer specific objections: Blanket statements don’t build trust. The content needs to tackle exact customer hesitations. For instance, proving safety to a new parent or showing real-world utility to a busy professional-
- Embrace the honest reviewer: In a culture of verification, flawless feels fake. Allowing creators to include minor, genuine criticisms actually validates and makes the entire review believable.
